- Summary
-
- Artist Whitfield Lovell talks about his interest in antiques and old photographs which he uses in conjunction with drawings on wood to create installations and tableaux whose subject is the period in African American history between Emancipation and the Civil Rights Movement. The lecture weaves together personal narrative, historical facts, and anecdotes which reveal the artist{u2019}s approach to his art
- Whitfield Lovell presents a slide talk on his work since 1985 when he was a student at Skowhegan. He discusses his work as an exploration of personal and family history, as well as an exploration of African-American life during the poorly documented period between Emancipation and the Civil Rights Movement. Lovell also talks about his fascination for photography and antiques, and how these two elements play an essential role in his work. He discusses installation projects Whispers from the Walls and Sanctuary: The Great Dismal Swamp
