- Summary
- Calling herself a painter to the core who extends visual principles off the canvas and "into space and using space as a time formulation," with an artistic heritage trace-able to Rauschenberg and Cezanne, Carolee Schneemann shows video and slides of her work done between the Sixties and the Nineties, focusing in detail on five works: Meat Joy (which grew out of hallucinations and dreams and subsequent drawings of an erotic ritual which involved meat, fish and chicken); Fresh Blood: a Dream Morphology (The artist pierces a man in a taxi with an umbrella, with the imagery concerned with blood, taboo and the dream itself); Mortal Coil (a memorial to seventeen friends who died in the space of two years, and who appeared to the artist in dreams to express their opinions about aspects of the installation); Infinity Kisses (eighty to ninety photographs of her cat, Cluny, kissing her on the mouth, a piece which explored "the fragile threshold of where intimacy becomes toxic and uncertain"); and a very recent work, More Wrong Things (an installation inspired by the death of a stray cat, in which images of atrocities and disasters in Sarajevo, Haiti, Lebanon, Vietnam and other places are played in conjunction with images of "domestic dead," i.e. animals killed by other animals or by hunters in the rural area where the artist lives). The artist speaks of herself as placing her body frequently in her work in order to force herself to "confront areas of denial and suppression," as well as to confront society's fragmentation and phobias about female sexuality and female power
